SUMMARY: This manuscript reviews some recent studies and new concepts that assess the efficacy of the natural antitumor immune response in cancer and the strategies developed to stimulate it from a clinical point of view.

 Back   ENDOCRINOLOGY
Scott N. Pinchot, Kyle Holen, Rebecca S. Sippel, Herbert Chen

SUMMARY: This study evaluated concordance in terms of KRAS status between colorectal cancer primaries and related metastases. The results show concordance between the detection of KRAS mutations in primary and metastatic tumors and suggest that this assessment could be used to predict response to targeted therapies such as cetuximab and panitumumab.

 Back   LUNG CANCER
Shang-Gin Wu, Yih-Leong Chang, Ya-Chieh Hsu, Jenn-Yu Wu, Chih-Hsin Yang, Chong-Jen Yu, Meng-Feng Tsai, Jin-Yuan Shih, Pan-Chyr Yang
The Oncologist 2008; 13: 1276-1284; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0093
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This study investigated the clinical characteristics and response to gefitinib of lung adenocarcinoma patients with complex EGFR mutations. Patients with complex EGFR mutations with the classical mutation pattern had the same response rate, progression-free survival duration, and overall survival time as those with single classical mutations.

 Back   NEURO-ONCOLOGY
Jörg Dietrich, Michelle Monje, Jeffrey Wefel, Christina Meyers
The Oncologist 2008; 13: 1285-1295; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0130

[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This study used TDI to detect early preclinical changes predictive of heart failure risk in epirubicin-treated cancer patients and correlated those findings with levels of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. The study found subtle cardiac abnormalities at a 200 mg/m2 cumulative epirubicin dose that persisted through 18 months of follow-up. These abnormalities were associated with high levels of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers.

Thomas R. Frieden, Julie E. Myers, Marian S. Krauskopf, Thomas A. Farley
The Oncologist 2008; 13: 1306-1313; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0157
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This article describes a prevention strategy for the United States to help win the war on cancer. Prevention can be achieved by reducing exposure to cancer-promoting agents, particularly tobacco but also alcohol and caloric imbalance; vaccination against specific virus-associated cancers; and early detection and treatment. These require more funding and a greater emphasis on public health programs and public policy.

Oriental Poppy by Bernique Longley.

Laudanum, or tincture of opium, was for many decades the only "treatment" for cancer in the Old West; the Oriental Poppy has, therefore, been chosen as the journal's icon.
