The Oncologist 2009; 14: 201-212; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0203
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] CME

SUMMARY: This study analyzed risk factors and treatment outcome in a large series of women with ductal intraepithelial neoplasia. Subsequent breast cancer events were more frequent in young patients, radiotherapy was associated with a lower incidence of such events, and low-dose tamoxifen was associated with a lower incidence of such events in patients with estrogen receptor–positive disease when human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 was not overexpressed.

 Back   CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY
Nima Sharifi
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 213-215; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0219
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This article presents emerging evidence on the molecular effects of antioxidants on tumor cells and evidence that the route of administration of antioxidants in earlier clinical trials for cancer could not achieve pharmacologically effective levels to call for a re-examination of the current evidence and further study of the role of antioxidants in cancer therapy.

 Back   ENDOCRINOLOGY
Megan R. Haymart
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 216-221; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0194
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] CME

SUMMARY: This article explores the characteristics of the normal thyroid and thyroid cancer that are age dependent. It then provides theories for the relationship between advanced age and poor prognosis, in addition to treatment options tailored to age at diagnosis.

 Back   GERIATRIC ONCOLOGY
Heidi D. Klepin, Lodovico Balducci
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 222-232; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0224
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] CME

SUMMARY: This study investigates the treatments and outcomes of older adults with acute myelogenous leukemia. The study finds that older adults with favorable tumor biology, good functional status, and minimal comorbidity can benefit from standard induction chemotherapy and recommends that treatment decisions be individualized after careful consideration of tumor biology and patient characteristics.

 Back   HEAD AND NECK CANCERS
Roberto Diaz, Marc D. Blakey, Patrick B. Murphy, A. Keith Cryar, Anthony J. Cmelak
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 233-239; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0156
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This article presents a case of severe thyrotoxicosis developing in a patient with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the base of tongue treated with induction chemotherapy followed by intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and warns physicians of the difficulty in diagnosing this condition because of the significant overlap between the signs and symptoms of severe thyrotoxicosis and the expected toxicities of cancer therapy.

Evelien L.J.M. Smits, Zwi N. Berneman, Viggo F.I. Van Tendeloo
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 240-252; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0165
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF] CME

SUMMARY: In this review, an overview is provided of both active and passive immunotherapy strategies that are under investigation or in use for the treatment of AML. For each strategy, a critical view on the state of the art is given and future perspectives are discussed.

Giorgio Scagliotti, Nasser Hanna, Frank Fossella, Katherine Sugarman, Johannes Blatter, Patrick Peterson, Lorinda Simms, Frances A. Shepherd
The Oncologist 2009; 14: 253-263; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2008-0232
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This review of two large, randomized, phase III studies of pemetrexed treatment for non-small cell lung cancer provides evidence of a significant and consistent interaction between non-small cell cancer histology and a pemetrexed treatment effect, confirming a treatment advantage for pemetrexed in patients with nonsquamous histology.
