An Update on Twenty Years of Anemia Management with Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents in Nephrology and Oncology/Hematology
Matti Aapro
The Oncologist 2009; 14(Supplement 1): 1-5; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-S1-1
[Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This article reviews the manuscripts in this issue and summarizes the conclusion that erythropoiesis-stimulating agents are safe and effective in alleviating anemia, diminishing transfusion use, and improving quality of life in symptomatic anemic patients when used according to current guidelines.

Matti Aapro, Jerry L. Spivak
The Oncologist 2009; 14(Supplement 1): 6-15; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-S1-6
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This review discusses where we stand today on anemia management in cancer patients and examines the balance between studies that show higher erythropoiesis-stimulating agent–associated mortality and those that do not show erythropoiesis-stimulating agent–associated mortality.

Francesco Locatelli, Harald Becker
The Oncologist 2009; 14(Supplement 1): 16-21; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-S1-16
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This paper reviews anemia management, including the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, in patients with chronic disease, and considers the impact of biosimilar erythropoietins.

Anatole Besarab, Walter Hermann Hörl, Donald Silverberg
The Oncologist 2009; 14(Supplement 1): 22-33; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-S1-22
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This paper reviews targeted hemoglobin levels in nephrology patients, the optimal management of iron, the use of iron during treatment with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, thrombocytosis and the link to vascular events, and the interlocking relationship among congestive heart failure, renal dysfunction, and anemia, and suggests that management of the latter may improve cardiac and renal function and quality of life.

Joachim Fandrey, Mario Dicato
The Oncologist 2009; 14(Supplement 1): 34-42; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-S1-34
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This study examines the possible influence of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents on tumors and evaluates whether these agents promote tumor growth and increase the incidence of venous thromboembolic events.

Jerry L. Spivak, Pere Gascón, Heinz Ludwig
The Oncologist 2009; 14(Supplement 1): 43-56; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-S1-43
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: An update on the management of anemia in oncology, the potential adverse events of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, the benefits and risks of blood transfusions, and quality of life are discussed in this paper.

Francesco Locatelli, Pere Gascón
The Oncologist 2009; 14(Supplement 1): 57-62; doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-S1-57
[Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

SUMMARY: This paper examines differences in the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents to normalize hemoglobin levels in the nephrology and oncology settings.

Oriental Poppy by Bernique Longley.

Laudanum, or tincture of opium, was for many decades the only "treatment" for cancer in the Old West; the Oriental Poppy has, therefore, been chosen as the journal's icon.
