NIH Public Access Policy

On January 11, 2008, the NIH released the text of the new mandated Public Access Policy as follows:

SEC. 218. The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: Provided, That the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law.

As of April 7, 2008, all final peer-reviewed manuscripts arising from NIH funds must be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication to be made freely available within 12 months of publication.

AlphaMed Press has implemented a policy that allows The Oncologist authors to comply with the NIH Public Access Policy.  AlphaMed Press authorizes NIH-funded investigators to submit an electronic version of their final, accepted manuscript to the NIH for publication on PMC no earlier than twelve months after the print or online publication in The Oncologist.  This authorization is a nonexclusive license only for the purpose stated in the NIH Public Access Policy.  AlphaMed Press reserves all rights not specifically granted in this nonexclusive license.  Further information on the NIH Public Access Policy is available at :  http://publicaccess.nih.gov/
