2003 Vienna Symposium
Optimizing Hemoglobin Levels and Beyond: Strength for Living and Meaningful Survival? The 3rd Educational Symposium on Advances in Cancer Anemia Management Optimizing Hemoglobin Levels and Beyond: Strength for Living and Meaningful Survival?, the 3rd Educational Symposium on Advances in Cancer Anemia Management, brought together more than 900 attendees to discuss the current clinical approach and future considerations for anemia management in cancer patients. The symposium's international roster of speakers addressed the quality of life issues that are critical to patients living with cancer, and shared research information that, when translated into clinical practice, has the potential to enhance patients' lives. At this symposium, more than 50 internationally recognized experts, clinicians from different specialties, cancer survivors, and scientists convened to discuss new perspectives on the role of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO, epoetin alfa) in the setting of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. Presentations focused on issues surrounding quality of life among cancer patients, with a particular emphasis on the impact of anemia and fatigue, in a variety of cancer types including:
New insights into prognostic factors and the role of radiotherapy were also discussed. Importantly, many of the presentations included perspectives from cancer survivors, making this a truly collaborative event between physicians and the patients they treat.
