2003 Vienna Symposium Forum on Anemia in Breast Cancer At Optimizing Hemoglobin Levels and Beyond: Strength for Living and Meaningful Survival?, the 3rd International Educational Symposium on Advances in Cancer Anemia Management (Vienna, Austria; 2003), internationally recognized experts, clinicians from different specialties, cancer survivors, and scientists gathered to present the latest and most significant developments in the management of anemia in solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. Several presentations focused on issues surrounding the quality of life for patients with cancer. Specific topics included the impact of anemia and fatigue, balancing quality of life with cancer treatment toxicities, and examining fatigue as a new priority in cancer management. Presentations also discussed how recombinant human erythropoietin, rHuEPO (epoetin alfa), may decrease fatigue and how treatment for anemia may also improve cognitive function.
