2003 Vienna Symposium Forum on Anemia in Hematologic Malignancies At Optimizing Hemoglobin Levels and Beyond: Strength for Living and Meaningful Survival?, the 3rd International Educational Symposium on Advances in Cancer Anemia Management (Vienna, Austria; 2003), internationally recognized experts, clinicians from different specialties, cancer survivors, and scientists gathered to present the latest and most significant developments in the management of anemia in solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.Several presentations focused on issues related to anemia in patients with hematologic malignancies, including prevalence and management, the correlation between fatigue and hemoglobin (Hb) levels, the recognition of Hb levels and anemia as prognostic indicators, and interesting data suggesting that recombinant human erythropoetin, rHuEpo (epoetin alfa), may offer antineoplastic benefits in addition to its red-blood-cell-stimulating activity.
